College-level academic advisors are not always in agreement about courses of study that are best for particular students. Many will, however, support dual-major degree programs for those students who have both the academic ability and the drive needed for what is often a five-year program of study.
For business students, the prospect of dual majors in business and engineering is particularly appealing. Fortunately, some top universities have come up with programs of study that combine technical education with business skills such as project management, financial management and marketing.
These programs are available at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Lehigh University in Pennsylvania has developed the Integrated Business and Engineering (IBE) Honors Program, which leads to a double major in engineering and business at the undergraduate level. It is a five-year program, in which a minimum of 30 credits are needed beyond the first B.S. degree.
Arizona State University has taken a slightly different approach. It offers an AACSB-accredited online program that combines a graduate business degree with a graduate degree in engineering. The program requires 56 credits beyond a B.S. degree, with 8 courses each in business and engineering.
The ASU program was developed with the assistance of major corporations, including Intel, Raytheon, Boeing and General Dynamics.
