Although the Free State of Maryland is a progressive, prosperous state with a population of 5,615,727, it has only 7 colleges and universities that offer business programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate S
chools of Business (AACSB). They are:
- University of Baltimore
- Frostburg State University
- Loyola College in Maryland*
- University of Maryland
- Morgan State University*
- Salisbury University
- Towson University*
Furthermore, only 3 of these 7 have the additional AACSB accreditation in accounting (marked by asterisks). As a former Maryland resident and now someone who still lives in the Greater Washington DC area, I have a clear favorite: Towson University. Here's why:
Towson University was founded in Baltimore in 1866 as the State Normal School. It changed its name in 1963 to Towson State College and in 1997 it became Towson University. It is the second largest university in Maryland, with over 18,000 students.
The school boasts a low student-faculty ratio of 18-1 while offering 63 undergraduate majors, 38 masters and 4 doctoral programs. Tuition is low, ranging from $7,234 annually for Maryland residents to $17,174 for out-of-state students.
Approximately 3,500 students live in on-campus housing at rates ranging from $2,430 to $2,860 per semester. Unrestricted meal plans vary from $1,601 to $1,945 per semester.
Towson has partnered with the University of Baltimore to offer MBA and MS degrees to accomodate working students and those whose academic schedules require flexibility.
Finally, Towson University was rated sixth in the Public Universities-Master's (North) category in the 2007 USN&WR "America's Best Colleges" issue.
