If the idea of studying for a business degree in paradise appeals to you,
perhaps you should consider attending the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI). I'm serious. With the exception of the great state of Hawaii, the Virgin Islands provide an almost perfect environment for college work.
Persons who follow this blog know that I give high marks only to those colleges and universities that are academically superior to others that offer similar programs. I will not retreat from that standard. In this case, however, I am inclined to give an approving nod to a university that may not be in the same league as the Wharton School, but which, on balance, is still worth attending.
I visited the University of the Virgin Islands on St. Thomas during the summer of 2007, and I was impressed. The business administration program is modest, but the small faculty is competent and enthusiastic. Most important, the classes are small, and the instructors get to know students on a first-name basis.
The school is accredited (overall) by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). UVI offers three business degrees:
- BA Accounting
- BA Business Administration
- MBA
The cost to attend a full year as an undergraduate is about $23,800. The tuition cost is $9,900 for the year. Other expenses are for room and board, travel, books and various student fees. The graduate program is about $1,000 more per year.
If you are worried about becoming "lost in the crowd" at a big-name stateside university, perhaps you should consider UVI. It is an excellent alternative.
