Readers of this blog have commented on the fact that I often provide ratings--good or bad--on the business programs offered by various colleges and universities. That's okay as far as it goes. But one reader recently asked me if I could give him any insights about business classes, since I used to teach business administration at the college level.![]()
Well, I can. In particular, I can give you some insights into the theory of management. This is a required course for anyone seeking a BSBA degree, and it is a course that I taught for some ten years. I also had a chance to "practice what I preach" in management by being the CEO of a major transportation company in northern Virginia for about 12 years (until the company was bought out by Budget Group--the parent of Budget Rent-A-Cars, Inc.)
First, let me say that the theory of management is very straightforward. You may quibble with my wording, but I will say that management breaks into four sections:
- Planning
- Organizing
- Leading
- Controlling
So far, so good. So all you have to do is memorize this and you are on the way to becoming a manager, right? Wrong. We need to look at each in detail, and that is what I intend to do in the next four blog entries. Please "tune in" every day during the upcoming week!
